Scottish Methodists Together Summer 2010

In the inaugural issue of Scottish Methodists Together we launched ‘Holiness and Risk’. Methodists in Scotland were encouraged to reflect on their spiritual journey, particularly those points where God calls us out of our comfort zone. In this issue we launch the ‘District Development Consultation’, in which similar themes are explored but in terms of our church structures, resources and mission.

Scottish Methodists Together Spring 2010

For most of my life I have been involved with Methodist churches which are within 7 miles of one another. Even at such close range many do not identify with being part of a wider circuit and even less a member of a district. In Scotland there is a deeper challenge and greater need to stand together given how sparsely we are populated across the land. Connexionalism, not isolationism, is central to Methodism.

Travelling far and wide across Scotland to our Methodist churches I am privileged to engage with concerns and celebrations in each. It is good to be able to share news and stories as I go from one to another and, I hope, bring encouragement through the good things which are happening and support in the difficulties. I am delighted that these exchanges will now be increased through the new District Newsletter which will be sent out three times during the year. Distributing it in printed as well as electronic form should enable us to share our stories more widely with others such as our housebound members and those who are not already part of the Methodist Church. I hope that in reading about how God is at work among us we will find stimulation, support and a greater sense of being ‘Scottish Methodists Together’.

Every blessing!

The Rev Lily Twist
