    1. A very sweet, old-fashioned feeling story. The Simple Soul of Susan by Noel Branham was an easy and fun read; the storytelling was charming and the characters catch your interest right away.A small Texas town. A girl with an old-fashioned soul. A boy next door - her childhood friend who has secretly been the love of her heart for years. A hilarious group of ladies in the nursing home. A captivating little adventure.I think what I enjoyed most about this book was the authenticity of it. It was wr [...]

    2. First thing's first: Noel graciously provided me with a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All of these opinions are my own. I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this book--not because I was doubting her writing ability, but because it's always nice to come across a debut, independently-published author with so much potential. Branham's writing flows naturally, making this an easy, quick read. Plus, it was just a good, old-fashioned story [...]

    3. Such a lovely, feel-good book, it’s hard to believe this is Noel’s debut novel. After a month of horror and thrillers, this book was the perfect palate cleanser moving into the cold months of winter. My Thoughts…First of all, thank you Noel for sending me your lovely book for review. It was a joy to read and I just love the cover which I understand you designed as well. It’s beautiful!“The Simple Soul of Susan” is simply put, a charming page-turner that makes you feel warm and fuzzy in [...]

    4. When reading the synopsis, you may think this story is a simple friends to lovers romance but The Simple Soul of Susan is more than a simple love story. This story starts when Susan is a teenager in high school dealing with typical high school drama. For Susan though she has an extra caveat to deal with because her best friend is the most popular guy in school that all the girls swoon for. Most girls either despise Susan for her closeness to Calder Hurtz or they feign friendship to pump her for [...]

    5. The Simple Soul of Susan is a novel by Noel Branham. This is a really good novel and it is well -written. It is evenly paced and the characters and setting are very realistic. Noel has put a lot of emotion in the book and it comes through very clearly. At first, you feel sorry for Susan, but soon come to admire her courage and bravery in facing daily life with spirit and determination to succeed. Calder, on the other hand, you feel a little antagonistic towards as it seems he uses his friendship [...]

    6. The author takes readers into the characters' worlds. From the very first pages of this book, the author immerses the reader in Susan's small, rural town--and all of the characters and personality that come along with it. Readers are pulled into the story and the setting in so many ways throughout the book that they feel that they are part of Susan's life and her small town world. The Simple Soul of Susan offers a lot of realism. Sometimes when you read a romance novel--you find yourself saying, [...]

    7. What a lovely, quiet read. Just the sort that you need when you're sick of murders and thrillers. Susan (aren't all the best people called that?) is the simple soul, living next door to an identical house in Texas where her "second" family live. She's grown up alongside the son of that house, Calder who, when the book begins Susan is rather sweet on.The title is ambiguous. Yes, Susan seems to have a simple soul - she's kind, honest, frank and rather lonely. Without complaint she's been looking a [...]

    8. This is a beautiful book about the life of a remarkable young woman in small-town Texas. The author does such a wonderful job evoking a sense of place; the descriptions of the town and its inhabitants make you fully experience her life in Walnut Springs. The main characters are people you love and root for, but they have realistic flaws too. Their romance has many twists and turns that keep you from guessing what will happen next. The minor characters are also well written and add humor and hear [...]

    9. “‘No, I got it.’ Calder busted outside and ran to the door. But Susan was too quick, and for the first time that night she attempted to open the door herself. But the handle wouldn’t move; the door was broken just like the door on her dad’s truck. Calder came around and opened it from the outside. ‘Why is your door broken?’ she asked. ‘Because I broke it.’ Susan frowned. ‘How did you break–?’ ‘Not how. Why. I broke it so that I could open it for you. As many chances as [...]

    10. This was an enchanting story of love, betrayal, and redemption! The author truly did a remarkable job showing the progression of the characters over time and hooking the reader with the real-life situations that I'm sure every reader can relate to. In this story are mini tales of unrequited love, embarrassing relatives, school bullies, and friendships won and lost. The relatability and genuine honesty of Noel Branham's book moved me and made me wish the story was never-ending. It's a rare book t [...]

    11. The only words I can say for Noel Branham's book is that I am feeling all the feels. This book will take you to some pretty sad places in life. Susan is the "outcast" in her class at high school. Her parents have abandoned her in one way or another and she is being raised by her uncle--a man disabled by a very serious accident. At this point of her high school career, instead of her uncle taking care of her, she's taking care of him. She often gets left out of events among her peers, but when sh [...]

    12. What an heartwarming story, loved it. You will meet Susan a sweet, shy girl who lives with her uncle who is in a wheelchair and takes care of him. Next door live the Hurtz, their son Calder is Susan's best friend. They are in their senior year, Calder is not aware that Susan feels more then just friendship, Susan suffers through bullies at school and Calder's girlfriends and sees him drifting farther away from her. She goes for comfort to her pet goat who she tells everything. I adored Calder's [...]

    13. Darling and quaint, ‘The Simple Soul of Susan’ is a beautifully written book with such charming qualities! It was wonderfully descriptive, character and plot developments. Love, family, friends along with all the good memories and tragic events that make up life; I was pulled in so many emotional directions as the plot stayed on a steady course branching towards the ending I held my breath for. The characters were well-written, and had depth. At times when Susan was faced with a new round of [...]

    14. WOW - another new author for me (Noel Branham) and OMG was I impressed with his writing. In the small town of Walnut Springs, Texas, Susan Combs is seventeen, a senior in high school, and lives with her uncle who is confined to a wheelchair. Susan (with the help of her neighbors - the Hurtz family) takes care of her uncle. Susan is close friends with Calder Hurtz - who is also a senior in high school. They attend the same school in Walnut Springs ISD. The story covers things that happen during th [...]

    15. This was a fun coming-of-age story! It's the (clean) romance of a boy who had it all (good looks, popular, money, great family) and a girl who had very little. They have grown up as neighbors and best friends. This is the story of how they grow up and find themselves.I was surprised when I learned that this was the author's first novel! It is very well-written. It seemed a little slow for me in the middle, but then picked right up again. I read this whole book in a weekend and loved it.If you lo [...]

    16. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this debut novel. The story was very engaging and well-written. I cried several times as I followed Susan through her last year of high school as she struggled with bullies and mean girls. She also had heartbreaking family issues. Her strength through it all was endearing. I wasn’t sure what to think of Calder at first. He wasn’t a bad guy, but didn’t seem to deserve her love, or even friendship. But, I really liked how things turned out.Thi [...]

    17. This book was a delightful read for me. It merges some coming of age concepts with a gentle romance story. I could find myself relating to parts of Susan. High school was an awkward time for me. I wasn't as shy and reclusive as her, but I also didn't have the same hand dealt to me. However, having the fear that you aren't good enough is something I believe many can understand. Also, the story does a great job of showing that what we perceive and what is reality is not always the same thing. The w [...]

    18. “That’s what love does. It hopes for things to be forever even though life ain’t.”  I just loved this book!! There were so many truths in it and so many things that made me happy. I reread so many of the scenes because I loved them so much! I hated Calder and then loved him for Susan and was rooting for him. I loved her pet goat. I loved the grannies. I loved Tia. I loved Walnut Springs. I just loved everything. Everything was perfect. I'm going to go read it again!!

    19. The cover attracted me initially but it was the incredible and precise prose that captivated me. The storytelling was so natural and fluid that I felt like I was in Walnut Sprints witnessing all of these events first hand. I can't get over Susan and Calder and the story they wove in the midst of their town. I couldn't stop rooting for Susan, for her dreams for her life and the hopes of love coming true. This is my favorite book!

    20. I haven’t read a book I loved as much as this in a long time. The characters were so real that by the end of it I was sad it was over. I felt like Calder and Susan were dear friends and when the book ended I lost them. I rarely get this involved in a book but I was completely captivated by this. It was so sweet and funny and I wish it didn’t end. Highly recommend!

    21. I just couldn't put this book down!! The grannies were hilarious and I'm pretty sure I have known a few people like Mary Sue. I fell in love with the Calder as he fell in love with Susan. It was so natural and sweet and real. You don't read books like this where the characters relationships are so deep and detailed. A MUST read!

    22. I loved this book so much! It is a touching story of friendship and romance with many unexpected twists. The ending was especially wonderful and heartwarming. I absolutely loved the old ladies who unknowingly help the romance to blossom. I loved how the characters were given realistic flaws, unlike so many characters in today's novels. I will definitely recommend this to my friends.

    23. I absolutely loved this book! It has literally made me remember that there is still good in the world. The story between Susan and Calder is innocent, yet very complicated. It will make you have all the feels, and make you believe in love again. Susan is innocent, but not in a naive type way.

    24. I had never heard of this author before and after one of my friendss told me about it I decided to give it a chance. WOW. I’m so glad I did!!!! This is my new favorite book!!! It was funny, sweet and so realistic. LOVED!!

    25. Loved this book!!!I think this is now my favorite book! Noel is a extremely talented author and had me hooked from the very first page! A book I couldn't put down! I laughed and I cried! Thank you for the adventure! I wish the book wasn't over!

    26. This book tells the tale of Susan, a girl who's trying her hardest to keep everything together around her. She's referred to as simple quite often, but is sharper than expected, caring, and loving. She's bullied by her classmates and has a difficult home life. Her best friend and neighbor, Calder, is the secret love of her life, and his parents help care for her as well. It's well written, but slower moving than many other contemporary works - it feels like a old movie reel where character devel [...]

    27. I was given an ARC of this novel in exchange for an honest reviewIt’s always great to discover an amazing, brand new writer- a truly excellent debut novel. The cover is also a beautiful design. The story was well-written and captivating, beautiful, charming and emotional. This book was so much more than a friends-to-lovers story. It’s a story of friendship and romance and fighting through the hard times.“Susan Combs had long ago found the love of her life. The only problem was the other pa [...]

    28. I wish I could convey with words the love I have for this book. You know you are in love when you reread your favorite scenes and swoon even when you have read it a second time. Susan is one of my favorite people. The first time I read it, I instantly recognized her as a kindred spirit. Somthing I didn’t see comin was who she ended up with and I loved that. I fell in love as Susan did. She made a good choice. I’m hoping for more books from this author!
