    1. I got this book in anticipation of my first backpacking trip, which I successfully completed a few weeks ago, and I found the book to be invaluable. It's an incredibly up-to-date (came out this year) and comprehensive guide to backpacking gear, which includes in-depth gear advice and recommendations (and sample gear lists) from the highly acclaimed hiker/backpacker, Andrew Skurka. The only advice that I followed in the book which wasn't practically perfect (for me) was the amount of food to take. 2. Bad ass! Super comprehensive, well thought out, incredibly practical and I've already made some much needed changes to my gear and mindset about hiking/backpacking. I took a beginner backpacking course with a local group in Seattle and I got this book as part of it, since NatGeo sent them tons and I got more out of reading Andrew's wisdom than from the course itself!I HIGHLY recommend this to anyone who is either getting into backpacking or wanting to get into it.

    3. Well-written for the sections I read, but not really that applicable as I’m not planning anything longer than a day-hike. Might look in to: Sawyer Stay-Put SPF 30 sunscreen and Quick Lock Carbon Fiber trekking poles

    4. Excellent layout and practical approach. You can mix his advice with your own experience to decide the best gear for you.

    5. Comprehensive guide to backpacking - with an objective layout on all the options, pros and cons for gear selection

    6. What a waste of money! Not worth the premium price. I believe NG used their name for extra profit. Won't buy again, ever. Never again

    7. Put simply, Skurka’s gear guide is the most efficacious written compilation of hiking and backpacking knowledge for outdoor enthusiasts (not just hikers!) of all levels and ages that I have come across. I have learned a great deal from perusing the first edition and have referred back to it on countless occasions. I have recommended it to many friends and acquaintances, gifted several copies, and even included it in a raffle for BigCityMountaineers. And if you already own the first edition, th [...]

    8. I am a big fan of Andrew Skurka's hiking advice and philosophy. This 2nd edition is continues to provide the clearest thinking about backpacking for hikers of all ability levels. I highly recommend this book, especially if you are going to be attempting a big adventure anytime soon!
