I continue to be surprised by my enjoyment of this series, and it continues to seem like a better written version of a commercial fiction plot - I've now realised, specifically the working-class-girl-who-became-a-writer story that I assumed sat between the covers of many of the Helen Forrester and Catherine Cookson novels which packed the adults' shelves in public libraries during my childhood.
