    1. I'm not usually a fan of YA -- especially indie YA -- because too many times authors think writing YA means "easier than writing adult."But Sara Pascoe has written an actual, genuine, YA novel, and it kicks ass.Rachel "Ratchet" Hollingsworth is a complex, realistic girl living in a complex, realistic world. Yes, her world turns out to include the ability to read minds, communicate with cranky cats, and open portals into the past, but it also includes social workers, foster parents, mental health [...]

    2. I have just finished reading this book and would recommend to others. I really enjoyed reading it and being transported back in time to the Essex witch trials, then to Old Istanbul seeing it through the eyes of a modern day 14 year old. The author has a refreshingly unique style of writing that would appeal to readers of all ages. It is a fast paced, intelligent and imaginative book.

    3. The reason I am giving this book 5 starts is that it is so close to me. I am officially 28 years old now, and I am just begging to understand that I am an adult. I want to be a teenager again, so I could unsay to my parents a lot of the thing I said. On every page of this book I saw myself and I heard the things I said to them and I called them and said that I was sorry, but somehow it feels like too little too late. This story is amazing. It is as realistic as it is not! It has magic and it has [...]

    4. Ratchet, the Reluctant Witch by Sara Pascoe is a children’s book aimed at the young adult reader (YA) about a teenage girl who is becoming a witch and covers time travel, history and witchcraft.Rachel (known as Ratchet) is a 14 year old girl living in foster care and wants nothing more than to be loved in a proper family and doesn’t feel foster care will give her that and decides to run away to London. She is unaware she is witch and when things aren’t as she thought they would be and emot [...]

    5. Ratchet the Reluctant Witch by Sara Pascoe is about a few witches and a cat. Rachel Hollingsworth, also known as "Ratchet", is a young, teenage girl who lives in the foster care system. At the beginning of the book, she doesn't know that she's a witch and it freaks her out when she begins developing some powers. Bryony Braxton is Ratchet's social worker, a witch. She has a cat, Oscar who can communicate to both of the witches and has a few snarky comments to add at each twist and turn. Ratchet r [...]

    6. I won this book through a giveaway. This is a story of 14 year old child who has powers but no idea what to do with them or process them. This leads her to various adventures and realizations. The book is well written and well suited to pre-teens and young adult readers.

    9. This is a wonderful young adult book about Rachel aka Ratchet, a 14 year old foster kid that is ready to strike out on her own. Ratchet has been in and out of foster care for years. She is finally in a good home, and has befriended a younger kid by the name of Jake. In many ways Ratchet has made herself responsible for Jake. Even though things are better for Ratchet and she has become good friends with Jake, she is still determined to get out on her own. So, she does leave taking money she has s [...]

    10. This really wasn't the novel that I was expecting from the blurb. Although Ratchet the Reluctant Witch may sound like a middle grade novel, it's actually young adult. It contains some threat of violence, racist language and sexual references. If you're planning on giving this to a younger reader, you might want to read it for yourself first. The book's concept was actually pretty interesting, focusing on a fourteen year old girl who's world view has been coloured by her terrible experiences. Schi [...]

    11. I really enjoyed reading this book and it grabbed my attention straight away, even though it isn’t normally the genre that I read.It is a YA novel (young adult) but I think adults will enjoy it as well.It was full of adventure, drama, fantasy, history, friendship, self discovery, humour and overall a really fun and enjoyable read. One of my favourite parts of the book was how it went back in time, using one of Ratchet’s powers of time travel. In this case it went back to the times of the Witc [...]

    12. This review has been crossposted from my blog at The Cosy Dragon . Please head there for more in-depth reviews by me, which appear on a timely schedule.Rachel (that’s Ratchet to you) has been stuck in foster care ever since her schizophrenic mother was deemed to not be stable enough to care for her. When Ratchet starts hearing voices and seeing things, she is determined to run away before anything else goes wrong. Unfortunately, she time travels away to the witch trials of Essex.Sigh. The blur [...]

    14. I received a copy from the author, through Publishing Push, in exchange for an honest review. This has in no way swayed my opinion.Ratchet the Reluctant Wish was a book I thought long and hard about accepting for review, because the request came at a time where almost every book let me down. I decided to accept it in the end but I have to say, that I didn't enjoy it nearly as much as I thought, and hoped, I would. If you ask me Ratchet the Reluctant Wish is targeted towards a younger audience, d [...]

    15. Ratchet the Reluctant Witch is spectacular. Pascoe crafted quite the spunky, teen witch with Ratchet. However, the story is so much more than just the tale of a teen learning to use powers she didn't expect. Pascoe takes readers on an, at times dangerous, but quirky and fun, adventurous bildungsroman. By the end of the story Ratchet has grown into Rachel. Magic and time travel are merely the extraordinary means that help to transform her and her life.Readers will not regret popping along for the [...]
