    1. Part of my 3rd grader's book club that I help with. I thought this was a cute fun read for them. It happened at a perfect time when my daughter made it to the school spelling bee, so that also might have added to us liking it. I am not familiar with other books from the series, but based on this book, it could be a good series for young girls starting out in reading. I think my daughter is just on the edge of it being too young for her (she's almost 9)

Sylvie and her friends are horrified to learn that the fifth graders' baseball field is being removed so that there can be a playground for kindergartners, and the fifth graders want to take over Sylvie's baseball field! The Spelling Bee Scuffle nicely combines an academic competition with a sports-related problem, and it also throws in a lesson about honesty and integrity, as Sylvie considers whether she should help Josh cheat in order to ensure his victory. Like the previous books in the series, this one has a strong sense of right and wrong, and it shows kids making mistakes but also putting things right and striving for improvement.
