    1. Fascinating. Loyalists from Tennessee, Arkansas, and Alabama contributed greatly to help win the war for the Union. Big themes from this book were that the loyalists viewed the conflict from a patriotic as well as a class perspective (they saw big plantation owners as the catalysts behind tearing apart the country to maintain their wealth, i.e. slaves). Most of them came from areas in the south where the owning of slaves was not economical.
