    1. “A Settler’s Year” blends the words of letters, diaries and periodical articles with pictures of living history to introduce its readers to the rhythm of life in early Wisconsin. Author Kathleen Ernst has extensively researched the writings of early settlers and has quoted their literary gems that speak of the sights and sounds, hopes and fears and joys and disappointments of their lives. Photographer Loyd Heath has captured the interpreters who recreate rural life of the late nineteenth c [...]

    2. This is one of those books that makes your heart soar! It's filled with brilliant photography featuring bucolic scenes of Old World Wisconsin (OWW) in Eagle. For those of you not familiar with OWW, it is a living history museum filled with artifacts from Wisconsin's pioneers. The author takes each picture and weaves text around it to tell the stories of these steadfast settlers. The photos are so picturesque that they could stand alone, but the author's prose brings them to life and makes that t [...]

    3. The photography of re-enactors at Old World Wisconsin is fabulous, as is the narrative by Kathleen Ernst. This book illustrates the seasonal rhythms of pioneer life so well--with farming, building, baking, logging and so many things covered, all at the historic buildings at Old World Wisconsin. Although unrelated to Laura Ingalls Wilder, this book makes me think about what life was like for her in Little House in the Big Woods. The emphasis on settlers from different European countries is intrig [...]

    4. Having visited Old World Wisconsin a few times, I was drawn to this book because of the connection with all the photographs taken there and to the history that is told there. I think it is good to step back from life of today and imagine what it was like here 150 years ago. There are so many things we take for granted now, and we often think that life was "simpler" back then. While reading this book, I was reminded that nothing was simple back then. This book was easy and quick to read and I wou [...]

    5. It's not really a story about a "Settler's Year," which is what I would have preferred. Ernst writes a bit of copy about what settlers might have thought about their first winter, or what kinds of seeds they may have brought with them from the Old World. And she makes liberal use of quotes from authentic letters and diaries, but most of them are a single sentence. The photos of scenes from OWW are great, but this is really just a coffee-table book.

    6. Wonderful historical perspective of Wisconsin's early immigrants told through letters, journals and diary entrees. Beautifully illustrated with photographs from Old World Wisconsin.

    7. Charming recounting of pioneer life in Wisconsin containing quotes from historical diaries and letters and illustrated with photos taken at Old World Wisconsin. References and bibliography included.

    9. Gorgeously illustrated and written with an eye for the lyrical beauty that can be nonfiction writing I heartily recommend this book for all who have an interest in the way settlers survived and in time were able to thrive. Divided by seasons, readers are privy to a well-documented and explained year in the life of a Wisconsin settler. Along with the pleasure of simply reading it, it's a book you'll want to keep out for others to share. It has inspired me to add Old World Wisconsin to the places [...]

    10. Beautiful full-color photographs from Old World Wisconsin, a living history museum, are interspersed with descriptions, narratives, and authentic journal entries. The book is organized by seasons, and explains what newly arrived immigrants as well as transplanted, east coast Yankees would have experienced during their first few years in Wisconsin. Each photo is clearly labeled and includes fascinating information about historical work, play, and culture.

    11. This was an enjoyable read, liked the combination of written memories from Wisconsin pioneer life alongside photographs taken at Old World Wisconsin's recreation of varied time periods in Wisconsin's history. I actually had the free epub book from the library, but since it is not listed used the Kindle version.
