    1. 4 and ½ Stars: A Worthy Civil War Adventure and an Endearing RomanceThis romance features life in the American south in the 19th century on the eve of the Civil War, though the beginning and the end take place in England (in Kent). Henley did justice to a difficult theme and portrays the mixed feelings of some Southerners and the real, economic conflict over the issue of slavery. The story is entertaining and the love between the hero and heroine very believable.Nicholas Peacock always thought [...]

    2. Overall, Master of Paradise was a somewhat mediocre read. That being said, I still enjoyed the book and was happy I read it.

    3. Nicholas is bastard born to an English lord, his stepmom (who wants Nicholas) rubbed his inheritance and he leaves to the US.In Charleston he doesn't waste time, buying land, buying slaves ( reluctantly), and getting a mistress ( who wants Nicholas). Soon he starts building his plantation and getting to know the Jacksons and their lovely daughters, 16 year old Jenny(who wants Nicholas) and 13 year old Mandy (who later wants Nicholas). As his plantation prospers and his wealth increases,( every el [...]

    5. An endearing romance in pre-civil war days. The story of family betrayal, plantation life, the romance of a very young southern girl and a British man who was abandoned and betrayed after the death of his father. Nicholas goes to America and builds from scratch and hard work Paradise. It was a bit long winded of a book, but I really enjoyed reading about blockade runners, slave life and a backstabbing family. The story is all about the leading up to the Civil War. The ending was predictable, but [...]

    6. A great read with lots of detail set against the backdrop of the start of the American Civil War. Towards the end it felt as though things had been added to extend it which didn't necessarily add to the overall story and I felt it could have ended much earlier and still been a great read. If you like sagas with lots of characters and detail, american history and all the upheaval of war then I recommend this.

    7. This is purely a romance but with the complication of civil war. I enjoyed the story even though it is not my normal read. I do think at times it lagged a bit but I am almost sure it is due to my personal hesitancy to read the genre more than the authors writing style. WaAr

    8. I had a really hard time getting into this book. The idea is good, but the characters seem rather shallow and I haven't been able to get interested enough to read past the first third or so. I'm going to try more later Maybe it is just because I am coming off of a couple really good ones

    9. This is more than just a good love story. I really enjoyed the glimpse into the hardships faced through the Civil War!!

    10. Stumbled upon this book, reading just out of boredom So far, it's more than I expected! Amusingly sexy with just the right romance. Hoping to finish it soon and make a decent review :)
