    2. I was going to say that this biography has not aged well, but then I wondered if it would have appeared bad even when it first appeared! You get a highly episodic account of Burton's life, but everything is colored by Edwardian values* that it becomes unreadable in many places. "Improprieties" are hinted at constantly, with that "wink, wink" attitude that the author is privy to salacious material but for propriety's sake, he won't divulge any of it.     3. This book utterly defeated me. I'm sorry it crushed me. Sir Richard Burton was, without doubt, a fascinating man. He was a British adventurer and writer of a sort that doesn't exist anymore. Unfortunately he doesn't interest me enough to plow through the detail of this book.
