    1. This volume spent a fair bit of time setting things up for the climax with no significant hints of what was to come, and the result was very little action or economic drama until rather closer to the end than one might expect after reading the preceding four volumes. Surprisingly, this did not in any way detract from the quality of the tale, because this freed the author to spend much more time than usual focusing on the biggest strength of the series: character development. The evolving relation [...]

    2. Spice & Wolf is a challenging series at times for me. There are difficult moments where I feel bogged down by the economics, the manipulative but playful mind games that Holo and Lawrence play, or just the rather sterile translation that makes already complicated interactions needlessly hard to follow. But despite the hurdles, or the long times it takes me to finish the books, I always reach to the emotional payoffs and am reminded of what it is I love so much about this series.Being the suc [...]

    3. I praise Isuna Hasekura for this novelThe drama on this volume surpasses the previous arcs so farThis volume follows our beautiful couple after the events on Tereo to the walled city of Lenos which focus on fur and lumber trades, as they search for more information about Holo's homeland they encounter a mysterious merchant that offers an audience to a man named Rigolo who's also the chronicler they are looking for. But there is more to it than that. As Lawrence wander the city he learned that he [...]

    4. After a weak book 4, book 5 is as great as books 1 and 3. Some of the difficult nuances of Lawrence and Holo's relationship takes centre stage on this book. Won't spoil which ones, as Lawrence is slow to pick it up in the book (as he always is) :)Anyway, after book 4 I was fearing the story's pace would slow down to an excruciating "find one clue to Holo's hometown per book ". Fortunately, it doesn't seem that way. Really looking forward to book 6. I know there are quite a few books in this saga [...]

    5. Usually the heartbreak in this series sets you on a path to believe that everything will workout in the end so it's all worth it. But this book lead to some real tension and hopelessness.

    6. Before I begin this review, can I just say, "Oh, my god! Oh. My. God! OH MY GOD!" There, now that we've gotten this out of the way, I can tell you all that volume 5 of Spice and Wolf was unbelievable. Amazing. Incredible! At least until the end, where the author must have suffered a brain fart. After arriving in the town of Lenos, Lawrence and Holo take a respite from their travels, but an unprecedented opportunity for Lawrence presents itself. However, the bigger the opportunity, the bigger the [...]

    7. In SummaryThis arc is a more difficult read than previous installments of Spice and Wolf, both because of the complex business deal featured and the clumsy portrayal of the emotional awkwardness between Lawrence and Holo. Still, romantics who stick it through will be rewarded by a bit of Holo/Lawrence fluffiness at the end.Review:The adventures of Lawrence and Holo continue with their arrival in the fur trading town of Lenos. As always, Holo is on the prowl for clues of her homeland, and while t [...]

    8. If you are on the fifth volume, then you already know holo and Lawrence. both characters continue to play of each other in this volume, but this time the stench of the inevitable ending hangs in the air. Lawrence is given an opportunity to reach his dreams but also knows the cost would mean parting with Holo. how it ends, I will let you read, but I was happy to see the teasing fun continue throughout the novel. of course, you want them to do something and put more effort in romance, but a true f [...]

    9. Arriving in the town of Lenos, Lawrence and Holo take a respite from their travels north - but a true businessman never rests! It isn't long before an opportunity for profit presents itself to Lawrence, one that could fulfill his dreams of owning his own establishment. But as always, the promise of great reward carries great risk - and risk is never greater than when one plans to use a wisewolf as collateral! As Lawrence and Holo feel the ties binding them stretched thin, has the time come for t [...]

    10. This was probably my favorite volume of the series so far. Up until this point there had been action, plotting and scheming, and economics along with some drama. But this volume, it takes the drama to a whole new level. The end for me was pretty incredible and makes me want to root for Lawrence's success even more, both financially and romantically.

    11. As they near Holo's destination, Holo and Lawrence's relationship seems destined to end, and neither of them are looking forward to its conclusion. When Lawrence is approached with a potential opportunity that promises to secure his future and fulfill his dreams, Holo is willing to help him. But nothing is ever simple in the life of a merchant. Ends on a bit of a cliffhanger.

    12. I absolutely love this series. It just gets better and better with each installment. And despite the focus on economics, it really can be an engaging read at times. Especially when Lawrence and Horo banter back and forth.

    13. Well drawn but the story is lacking for me. It might just be the translation I'm reading. The dialogue seems off.
