This book has made me think differently about a few things - but namely - insects and allegory.Insects as a motif or metaphorical concept frequently get used as methods of discussion metamorphosis, decomposition, transformation and mortality in seventeenth-century Dutch still lives. The iconographic "vanitas" reading is overworn, so Berger suggests we look at the caterpillar as an agent of damage - the literal chewed up leaves as evidence of allegory working its invading violence upon a scene.
