    1. This book is so good! It represents the true meaning of patriotism that so many of us seem to have forgotten. To me, there's nothing more important than understanding that our patriotic songs and traditions are born from war, tragedy, and thankfulness and appreciation for everyone who has sacrificed their lives for their country. This book does a good job of explaining these things and would be great to teach children that there's a deeper meaning behind every tradition that we practice in Ameri [...]

    2. This is the second non-fiction picture book I've read from Steven Kroll. I'm impressed by his research. I love the illustrations. This is the story of how our national anthem came to be. I've actually been to Fort McHenry and toured the place with a guide. While I'm a very different person now from who I was then, I got so much more out of this book. "The Star Spangled Banner" has been my favorite song for a long time. It is very moving and encouraging to remember that our country has seen many [...]

    3. Great historical narrative of the events leading up to Francis Scott Key's temporary captivity and his writing of the words to our national anthem. Great supplement to the study of US history and a good arts connection with the song (musical score included). Additional historic details and graphics are included. The illustrations are beautiful--the artist used stylistic elements of the era and they help bring the scenes to life.

    4. During the war of 1812 Francis Scott key boarded a british ship in an effort to get his friend back, Dr. Beanes, who was imprisoned by the british. While there he witnessed the attack on Baltimore. He could still see the American flag and he wrote a poem about it. I really liked that this book was written like a story. I think that history should more often be taught in story form. I would incorporate this book into a history lesson or read in for a holiday.

    5. I'm not usually terribly crazy about Steven Kroll books, but this one is amazing! What depth of research! I am absolutely astounded by this book! I had no idea that there were multiple verses in the Star-Spangled Banner. It makes sense though. I mean ending the poem with an unanswered question didn't make much sense. It really does a service to illustrate a largely forgotten war fought on American soil. I am really a big fan of this book.

    6. Good book on the events surrounding the writing of the Star spangled banner. Happy to see all four stanzas here. I've seen other books that did not contain all four and I wouldn't read them to the kids. Stanza four honors God. "Praise the power that hath made and preserved us a nation! Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just, And this be our motto, "In God is our Trust.""

    7. A beautifully illustrated book about the events that led to the writing of our national anthem written by Francis Scott Key. I enjoyed this book and would include it S.S. when discussing the American Revolution. Also, I would follow it up with a writing activity. Excellent oil paintings!

    8. Very educational book, that I've used in many of my substitute teaching days. It really peak some students interest and they further researched the topic. Excellent book! Thank you Franklin Public Library for the loan.

    9. This book is perfect to read during social studies time. Yes, it might be too long to read the whole book in a read aloud, but could be sepearted in days. It is very educational, yet interesting to learning about our history and how our star spangled banner came to be.

    10. Great children's book about the history of the song the "Star Spangled Banner". Great illustrations, excellent history, and well told story, all in one small book.

    11. Well-written children's story of the origin of "The Star-Spangled Banner." Illustrations are beautiful and add much to the story!
