    1. This was one of my favorite books of childhood, and I still have a copy that my grandmother gave me after it was remaindered from the elementary school where she taught. Beautiful illustrations and a story of struggle and discovery as a family moves across country in hopes of a better life.

    2. The last in the 'Alice and Jerry' series of readers, for sixth-grade readers, at least originally. (These days, it might well be considered for younger readers, given the changes in middle grade and YA writing styles! I read it at a much younger age, seven or eight, and had no trouble with it.) This one strikes me as being a better read than the previous ones, though it's still pretty didactic--not surprising given the series was intended to be used in schools--but then Elizabeth Coatsworth made [...]
